The word Sangala means joy in the Lumasaba or Lugisu language. We aspire for students to find joy in learning through innovations that improve their communities. Because joy broadens learners’ thinking and encourages curiosity, it becomes a catalyst for the creative insight and problem-solving that drive innovation.
Our students are mastering a cumulative sequence of digital and physical design tools:
Digital Design
Students begin by learning digital vector graphics in Inkscape software and operating digital die cutters to build multi-layered paper collages and physical shadowboxes. They then transition into grid-based computing and pixel logic to design complex mosaics.
Fabrication
Students translate their physical prototypes into precise geometric digital files via TinkerCAD – a free web app for 3D design, electronics, and coding – and manufacture solid physical figures using our Bambu A1 Mini 3D printers.
Digital Literacy
To bridge the gap in textbook accessibility and enhance independent study, we launched an exciting digital library initiative in May 2026. Participating Sangala Scholars and faculty have been equipped with personal Kobo Clara BW electronic readers. These robust, waterproof devices operate entirely offline and feature a month-long battery life, giving students uninterrupted access to a comprehensive, pre-loaded library of curriculum-aligned, open-source textbooks for their daily classes.
The ultimate goal of the Sangala Program is to build robust, practical capacities in Computer Assisted Design, digital fabrication, microelectronics, and microcontroller programming. As the curriculum progresses, students will transition from creating static figures to engineering automated mechanisms that move independently using motors and code.
Crucially, these advanced technical skills will be directly translated into community-focused engineering initiatives. Students will eventually design and build scientific instruments such as 3D printed microscopes, automated weather stations, and environmental sensors tailored to address local challenges – such as monitoring groundwater contamination and identifying agricultural pathogens to improve local farming yields.
By fostering creative problem-solving and modern technical literacy, the Sangala Program is equipping Hawthorne-Scribner High School students to become future leaders, innovators, and practical problem-solvers within their communities.
