Design through Making

Sketch it. Build it. Share it. Improve it.

Welcome to Design through Making!

Welcome, students and families! We are so glad you are here. Design through Making is a hands-on class in the Sangala Innovations Program where students learn by doing – sketching ideas, building prototypes, testing them, and making them better. Every week brings a new topic, a new challenge, and a new chance to create something of your own.

Mistakes are welcome here. Each attempt teaches us something, and every student will leave this class with a portfolio of work they can be proud of. Let’s make something great together!

Class Expectations

Design through making is a practice of consistency – skills are built week over week. Every student is expected to:

  • Post every week. Share the results of each week’s assignment in the correct weekly strand on the forum – no weeks off.
  • Share original work. Your submission should come from your own process, in your own words.
  • Show the process, not just the result. Include sketches, photos, notes and iterations – what you changed and why.
  • Meet the deadline. Post early rather than at the last minute. If you know you cannot post on time, contact your teacher before the deadline.
  • Present clearly. Use clear, properly oriented photos and enough explanation to follow your thinking.
  • Be respectful and constructive. Treat the forum like a professional design studio and use feedback to improve your work.

Our Commitment

What Students Can Expect from the Teacher

Expectations run both ways. Each week’s topic and brief will be posted clearly with enough time to complete the work, every post will be reviewed, help is available whenever students get stuck, and these expectations will be applied fairly to everyone.
